In the Philippines pageant has been part of our traditions. A tradition
that pass from generation to generation. A tradition that full of hopes,
dreams, and beliefs.
Here in
Municipality of Bulan, we celebrate Ms. Bulan as a part of our annual
celebration for our perpetual town fiesta. As a tradition we recognize all
women to join and be a part of the most outlandish event of the night, to
unbold their talent, lean and clever, that can represent as a soul beauty of
Bulan. A beauty that concealed fear, a beauty that conquers all odds for a
night to be one of the most elegant woman of all. A true beauty of Bulan.
THE TRUE BEAUTY OF BULAN
Every girls dream is to wear a sparkling crown on their head and ramp in front of millions and millions of people who adores them.
Our group decided to make a documentation about pageants, and what other event there is here in Bulan, but Miss Bulan? Since 1940's, Miss Bulan is annually held during the Bulan Town Fiesta. Back then, Miss Bulan was money contest. it was then revised and changed.
Beauty with brains is now the latest trend. "What is beauty if the brain is empty?" Yeah, I totally agree with it.. beautiful girls are now everywhere but you'll seldom find wisdom with them. For me, it is a musr, indeed beauty is more stunning if we girls have brains. :)
Anyways.. we are fortunate enough to have access with the very first crowned Miss Bulan, 1947. She is Salvacion Gepulle Tan-Cheng. Mother of our Honorable former Mayor Helen Baby de Castro. Wife of Suntay Cheng, the owner of Suntay Trading and the famous "Mama Vacion". She studied dentistry at Centro Escolar University but pursued with entrepreneurship after she graduated.
SALVACION GEPULLE TAN
We have scheduled an interview and luckily she granted our request. Me and my partner (Danica Gojar) was the one that asked questions about her experience and the rest were camera men. "Mama Vacion" was a bit apprehensive about the history of Bulan (during the liberation). She told us that she is one of the passengers who rode to the very first airplane that landed here on Bulan. Rafael de Castro (founder of R.G.C.C.) and Mama Vacion, according to her were very good friends. Sir Rafael was the one who encouraged her to join the pageant. She said that her and other co-candidates were all good friends and they have just really enjoyed the whole experience. Support of family and friends was the key of her winning.
Mama Vacion is now 87 years old but still in good shape. :)
From
1940 beauty lets go to the 80’s ..
Miss
Helen Blancaflor Colingacion, our second respondent together with Miss Mary Ann
Penaflor was spotted women in action by our team at Sabang Park. They were
volunteers of the medical mission held on the same venue. By luck, they have
granted our request for a quick interview.
According to her, 1986 pageant was also a money contest. It
is the first time she joined in any beauty contest. She was overwhelmingly
supported also by friends and families. They are the reason for her to be
confident during the competition. She was 18 years old back then. The experience
after the pageant was exciting by the help of the sponsor Lion’ Club. They made
several missions and activities for the needy during her reign.
She was by heart is a true loving citizen. An active member
of the Seventh Day Adventistand a promising teacher in abroad.
“Hindi ka dapat mapag mataas hindi porke’t ikaw ang nanalo
sa pageant dapat parang ka level mo lang yung mga taong nasa paligid mo.” –

The picture above is Mary Ann Penaflor, Miss Bulan 2012.
She just graduated at R. G. de Castro Colleges at the same
year with a degree in Bachelor of Elementary Education. She is now a Licensed
Teacher in Bulan North Central – A.
Unlike the other first two, Miss Mary Ann Penaflor competed
not with money but with her inborn beauty and intelligence. She stated to us
how nervous she was during the event. Nervou as she was,she believed in herself
and strut the runway. She told us also how determined she was to win the crown that night. By confidence,
determination, beauty, intelligence and faith she successfully won the pageant and
bagged many minor awards. She believed that her joining was God’s will.
I actually had fun during our interview to her. She is
funny, smart and she answered us amusingly.
“Ang pagiging Miss Bulan ay di lang puro kagandhan lang
kailangan mo din na mayroon kang puso at dapat maging role model ka sa iba.” –Mary
